The Associated Press declared Joe Biden the winner of the U.S. presidential race at 11:26 a.m. Eastern Time on November 7, 2020, then distributed its authenticated race-call data through an oracle system connected to the Ethereum and EOS blockchains.
The on-chain publication was consequential for cryptocurrency infrastructure even though it did not involve a token launch or protocol upgrade. It showed a major institution using public blockchains to make a real-world assertion available to software that could verify its origin and act on it. Contemporaneous reporting documented at least one prediction market using the AP feed to determine its outcome.
The experiment also illustrated an essential limitation: a blockchain could preserve the message and its provenance, but it could not independently decide whether the underlying election call was correct.
What the primary records establish
AP’s chronology records three relevant announcements on November 7. It called Pennsylvania for Biden at 11:25 a.m. Eastern, declared him elected president at 11:26 a.m., and reported at 11:54 a.m. that President Donald Trump had not conceded and was promising legal challenges.
Everipedia’s surviving project documentation says AP used its OraQle software to publish presidential election results on Ethereum and EOS. The Ethereum implementation was powered by Chainlink, which connected the off-chain AP data to a smart contract. The documentation identifies the Ethereum contract as `0x0792724900B551d200D954a5Ed709d9514d73A9F` and the AP-listed wallet as `0x436ee8cb3a351893b77f8b57c9772daec3a96445`.
Etherscan preserves three November 7 request transactions from that wallet to the identified contract. Their block timestamps are 16:31:54, 16:39:46 and 17:15:56 UTC. The first transaction therefore appeared less than six minutes after the 11:26 a.m. Eastern minute recorded for AP’s presidential call. Because AP’s chronology supplies only minute-level precision, the exact elapsed number of seconds cannot be established.
Everipedia’s EOS documentation identifies `associapress` as the relevant account and says the EOS contract contained presidential, House, Senate and gubernatorial race calls. These records support the existence and architecture of the dual-chain publication without establishing that either blockchain counted ballots.
An oracle became market infrastructure
Smart contracts cannot directly observe elections, weather, court decisions or market benchmarks. An oracle supplies that external information. In this case, cryptographic signatures and identified accounts allowed applications to test whether a message came through the AP-authorized system rather than accepting an unattributed claim.
That capability had an immediate financial use. A November 7 Cointelegraph report said the YieldWars prediction market relied on the AP data and settled after the presidential call reached Ethereum and EOS. The surviving report supports the occurrence of a downstream settlement, although Coinburn did not locate a preserved primary YieldWars contract record that independently reconstructs its complete payout state. The settlement is therefore contextual evidence, not the basis for the article’s Grade A central claim.
The episode mattered because it converted a newsroom decision into machine-readable input for financial software. Once a contract was configured to trust the AP oracle, publication could initiate consequences without a separate human operator deciding whether to accept the update.
What the blockchain did not prove
AP’s announcement was a race call based on its vote count and analysis. It was not a state certification, judicial ruling, candidate concession or constitutional transfer of authority. Writing the call to Ethereum and EOS did not elevate it into any of those categories.
Nor did blockchain consensus independently validate the vote totals. The networks could establish that particular accounts submitted data, order those submissions and preserve them against ordinary alteration. Accuracy still depended on AP’s collection, analysis and editorial decision—and on the oracle software correctly carrying that information on-chain.
As of November 7, the defensible conclusion was consequently narrow but important: an established news organization had supplied an authenticated presidential race call to public-blockchain applications, and at least one financial contract reportedly acted on it. The system demonstrated verifiable provenance and automated distribution, not an infallible source of real-world truth.
