Binance launched Binance Jersey on January 16, 2019, opening direct trading between bitcoin or ether and the British pound or euro through a separately operated platform based in Jersey.

The venue began with four markets: BTC/GBP, ETH/GBP, BTC/EUR and ETH/EUR. Contemporaneous reports reproducing Binance’s announcement said registration, deposits, withdrawals and trading had opened, subject to account verification.

The development mattered because it added conventional-currency access to a major cryptocurrency trading business whose principal platform was identified primarily with crypto-to-crypto markets. Customers using the Jersey venue could enter or leave bitcoin and ether positions through pounds or euros without first obtaining another digital asset on Binance.com.

A separate gateway for European currencies

Binance Jersey was described as an entity independent from Binance.com while using the parent platform’s technology. That distinction was operationally important. A fiat gateway must interact with banking systems, identity checks and jurisdiction-specific compliance processes that differ from the requirements of a crypto-only order book.

The launch materials required users to complete know-your-customer verification before using the fiat markets. The surviving reports do not provide an event-day breakdown of completed verifications, deposits, trading volume, order-book depth or banking settlement times. The opening of the service is verified; its initial liquidity and practical reliability cannot be quantified from the reviewed records.

The four listed pairs also defined the launch’s limits. Binance Jersey did not open a general market between every asset available on Binance.com and European currencies. Its initial offering was confined to bitcoin and ether, each quoted separately in pounds and euros.

That narrow selection nevertheless created two direct price-discovery venues for each cryptoasset. Prices on Binance Jersey would be formed by its own orders and trades, so they were not guaranteed to match prices on Binance.com or competing exchanges. No universal cryptocurrency closing price existed across those fragmented markets.

Jersey supplied the institutional setting

The January launch followed a June 2018 memorandum of understanding between Binance and Digital Jersey, the island’s digital-industry organization. Digital Jersey’s primary announcement said the parties planned to develop an exchange and compliance function, provide blockchain-related training and support local startups. It also said the initiative was hoped to create around 40 jobs; that was a stated objective, not a verified January 16 employment count.

Binance executives presented Jersey’s digital infrastructure, financial-services sector and legal environment as reasons for choosing the island. Those statements explain the company’s rationale but should not be converted into a broader claim that every activity, customer or asset on the platform carried a particular regulatory approval or protection. The reviewed event-day records do not reproduce a Binance Jersey license, supervisory decision or legal opinion establishing the exact regulatory perimeter.

The company also framed the venue as a bridge for Europe and the United Kingdom during uncertainty surrounding the United Kingdom’s planned departure from the European Union. That was Binance’s contemporaneous commercial interpretation. The evidence verifies that the venue offered pounds and euros; it does not establish that cryptocurrency trading reduced economic or currency risk associated with Brexit.

What the launch established

By January 16, 2019, the defensible conclusion was that Binance had moved beyond announcing a European fiat gateway and opened one with four specified markets and mandatory identity verification. The launch expanded the company’s exchange architecture while illustrating how global crypto businesses were creating locally structured platforms to connect bank money with digital assets.

No event-day evidence establishes customer adoption, profitability, sustained liquidity or future regulatory treatment. Those outcomes remained unresolved when Binance Jersey opened.
