Bitcoin’s fee market cooled sharply on June 9, 2024 after an OKX wallet-consolidation operation had driven transaction costs and estimated mining revenue higher during the preceding two days.

Bitcoin.com’s contemporaneous June 9 snapshot placed hashprice—the estimated gross daily revenue available from one petahash per second of mining capacity—at approximately $62 per PH/s by 2:00 a.m. Eastern time. That was down from a reported June 8 peak of $95 per PH/s per day, the highest level since April 21 in Hashrate Index’s series.

At 6:30 a.m. Eastern on June 9, the same report recorded Mempool.space’s high-priority fee estimate at 46 satoshis per virtual byte, or approximately $4.47 for the modeled transaction, while 324,132 unconfirmed transactions remained in the observed mempool. Those were provider snapshots, not universal prices: transaction size determines the total fee, individual Bitcoin nodes can hold different pending-transaction sets, and fee recommendations change continuously.

A wallet operation became a network-wide fee event

OKX’s Chinese-language account said on June 7 that its team had been testing a collection program and had stopped it. The brief statement did not publish technical details or explicitly characterize the software as defective.

Independent Mempool.space developer Mononaut attributed a large group of transactions beginning at block 846,867 to OKX consolidation activity. His June 8 final tally covered 2,385 confirmed and pending transactions spending 357,092 inputs and consuming 103 million virtual bytes. He calculated an average fee rate of 246.65 satoshis per virtual byte and total fees of 254.28 BTC.

Those figures were an analyst’s address-and-transaction classification, not an audited OKX disclosure. The inclusion of both confirmed and pending transactions also matters: a pending transaction can be replaced, dropped or confirmed under conditions different from those visible at the measurement cutoff. OKX confirmed the collection test but did not independently confirm the 254.28 BTC total or the claim that its software had bid against its own transactions.

Why miners briefly benefited

Bitcoin users compete for limited block space by attaching fees to transactions. Miners generally prioritize transactions offering greater revenue per unit of block space, so one large actor repeatedly submitting high-fee transactions can raise the price faced by unrelated users seeking prompt confirmation.

The episode was especially significant after Bitcoin’s April 20, 2024 halving reduced the fixed block subsidy from 6.25 BTC to 3.125 BTC. Transaction fees remained the variable portion of miner compensation. The reported rise in hashprice to $95 per PH/s per day therefore represented a temporary improvement in estimated gross revenue during a period when the lower subsidy had tightened mining economics.

Hashprice is not profit. Hashrate Index combines network conditions, transaction fees and bitcoin’s dollar price into a standardized revenue estimate. An individual operator’s result also depends on machine efficiency, electricity, hosting, pool charges, uptime and whether its pool actually mined the high-fee blocks.

What the June 9 reversal established

Mempool.space records block 847,143 at 04:25:04 UTC on June 9, confirming that block production continued during the fee-market unwind. The retreat from the June 8 hashprice peak showed how quickly exceptional fee revenue could disappear once the consolidation pressure diminished.

The defensible conclusion is narrower than assigning every pending transaction or fee movement to OKX. The exchange acknowledged stopping a collection-program test, attributed transaction analysis identified an unusually large consolidation campaign, and contemporaneous June 9 measurements showed both priority-fee estimates and miner revenue falling substantially. The episode demonstrated that operational choices at a major custodian could temporarily affect costs across Bitcoin’s shared block-space market without changing the protocol’s subsidy or capacity rules.
