Bitcoin declined approximately 2.4% on August 24, 2019 while remaining above $10,000, according to separate records from Kraken and CoinMarketCap. The retreat extended across most large cryptoassets, but trading activity on Kraken remained heavily concentrated in BTC.
Kraken’s daily exchange report placed bitcoin at $10,145, down 2.41% on its measure. It recorded $94.6 million traded across all Kraken markets, including $71.2 million attributed to BTC. Dividing the published BTC figure by the exchange-wide total produces a BTC share of approximately 75.3%. That percentage is a Coinburn calculation limited to Kraken’s report, not an estimate of bitcoin’s share of global cryptocurrency trading.
A broadly negative large-cap board
Kraken reported ether at $190.40, down 1.71%; XRP at $0.2736, down 1.01%; bitcoin cash at $308, down 1.15%; and litecoin at $73.39, down 1.82%. Monero registered the sharpest decline among the exchange’s more actively traded assets, falling 5.03% to $79.40.
A few assets moved against the broader direction. Kraken placed stellar up 1.62%, cardano up 1.56% and ethereum classic up 0.43%. Tether was reported unchanged at $1. The mixed results below the largest assets prevent the session from being described as a uniform market liquidation, although the highest-capitalization non-stablecoin assets mostly declined.
CoinMarketCap’s August 24 historical snapshot independently showed bitcoin at $10,159.96, down 2.36% over its stated 24-hour window. It listed a bitcoin market capitalization of $181.81 billion, a circulating supply of 17,895,112 BTC and reported 24-hour volume of $15.45 billion.
The aggregate snapshot also placed ether down 1.46%, XRP down 1.25%, bitcoin cash down 2.51%, litecoin down 2.39% and BNB down 2.30%. Among the ten largest assets by reported market capitalization, every non-stablecoin asset showed a negative 24-hour change. Tether, ranked seventh, was down 0.13% at $1.0026.
Two datasets, two different measurements
Kraken’s $10,145 bitcoin figure was $14.96 below CoinMarketCap’s $10,159.96 snapshot, a difference of about 0.15% relative to the CoinMarketCap value. That small gap is consistent with records produced from different venues, observation times and calculation methods; it is not evidence of a simultaneously executable price discrepancy.
The volume figures require even greater caution. Kraken’s $71.2 million BTC total described activity on one exchange. CoinMarketCap’s $15.45 billion field aggregated reported activity across covered markets. The sources do not establish that their cutoffs, qualifying trades or treatment of venue reporting were comparable. Consequently, the global figure cannot be used to calculate Kraken’s market share.
What August 24 established
The defensible event-day conclusion is narrow: bitcoin lost roughly 2.4% while holding above $10,000, most major non-stablecoin assets declined, and BTC supplied approximately three quarters of Kraken’s reported turnover. The evidence does not identify the traders behind the movement or establish a single cause.
The data also do not demonstrate a lasting change in bitcoin dominance, investor risk appetite or correlations with traditional markets. Continuous trading, fragmented exchange liquidity and undefined daily cutoffs limit causal interpretation. August 24, 2019 is best preserved as a measured snapshot of a BTC-led market experiencing broad but orderly weakness, rather than as evidence of a discrete crash or structural regime change.
