The threshold mattered because it condensed more than fifteen years of continuous settlement history into a verifiable ledger count. Bitcoin’s genesis block dates to January 3, 2009. By May 5, 2024, the network had persisted through multiple market cycles, mining-reward halvings and changes in transaction formats while continuing to append valid blocks under the same proof-of-work chain.

What the billion counts
