Bitcoin’s Ordinals index passed one million inscriptions on April 8, 2023, less than four months after the first inscription was recorded on December 14, 2022. The project’s explorer assigned inscription number 1,000,000 to an on-chain artifact, while the historical series maintained by Dune Analytics placed the cumulative threshold on April 8.
The milestone mattered because it demonstrated demand for using Bitcoin blockspace for data-bearing artifacts, not only transfers of bitcoin. It also required a precise qualification: the underlying transactions were confirmed by Bitcoin, but their interpretation and sequential inscription numbers came from the experimental `ord` indexer rather than Bitcoin’s consensus rules.
What an inscription represented
The Ordinal Theory Handbook described inscriptions as arbitrary content attached to individual satoshis through reveal transactions. Content could include text, images and other media stored in Bitcoin transaction witness data. Ordinal theory supplied the method for identifying and tracking the satoshi associated with that content without creating a separate blockchain or changing Bitcoin’s consensus protocol.
Consequently, one million inscriptions did not mean one million users, owners, purchases or economically distinct assets. A single participant could create many inscriptions, identical content could be inscribed repeatedly, and one transaction could interact with the indexing rules in ways that made a simple count less straightforward. The defensible measurement was one million entries recognized under the prevailing `ord` indexing convention.
The numbered artifact at the threshold is independently identifiable by its inscription ID, which is derived from the Bitcoin reveal transaction and input index. That on-chain reference is more durable than the display number: the transaction exists in Bitcoin’s ledger, while software conventions determine whether and where an indexer lists it.
BRC-20 accelerated the count
The immediate context was a surge in text inscriptions associated with BRC-20, an experimental convention introduced in March 2023 for deploying, minting and transferring fungible-token balances through JSON inscriptions. Contemporaneous reporting on April 3 attributed the expanding daily count primarily to BRC-20 activity and recorded 58,179 inscriptions on April 2, up 83.5% from the previous reported daily record of 31,692 on March 9.
Those figures came from Dune’s Bitcoin Ordinals dataset, not a Bitcoin protocol counter. They nevertheless showed why the cumulative total accelerated: small text inscriptions enabled participants to issue many entries without creating image-sized artifacts.
For miners, every confirmed reveal transaction competed for finite blockspace and paid a transaction fee. That made inscriptions relevant to Bitcoin’s fee market and the longer-term debate over revenue as block subsidies decline. The one-million threshold did not prove that demand would persist, that miner revenue had reached a sustainable floor, or that BRC-20 balances had the legal or technical properties of tokens issued by smart contracts.
An event-day indexing dispute
The count already carried a documented limitation on April 8. An Ordinals repository discussion opened on April 5 reported that `ord` versions through 0.5.1 inspected only the first input of a transaction for inscriptions. Contributors debated whether recognizing additional inputs would change established numbering.
That dispute did not reverse the April 8 milestone under the index then in use. It showed that inscription numbers were a metaprotocol convention subject to implementation and governance decisions, while inscription IDs and confirmed Bitcoin transactions remained the underlying records.
Later verification
Research published after April 8 preserved the same milestone date. A May 2023 Binance Research table, sourced to the Dune series, listed one million inscriptions on April 8. Reporting on April 11 also recorded that the threshold had been surpassed on April 8. These later records corroborate the chronology; they do not eliminate the indexer limitations that were already visible on the event date.
