Bitmain announced the Antminer E3 on April 3, 2018, publicly offering specialized hardware for Ethash, the proof-of-work algorithm then used to secure Ethereum. The preorder converted weeks of speculation about an Ethereum-focused application-specific integrated circuit, or ASIC, into a commercial product with a name, price and projected delivery window.

The development mattered beyond one hardware sale. Ethereum mining had largely depended on general-purpose graphics processing units. A manufacturer able to build and distribute specialized Ethash machines could change miners’ costs, concentrate hardware supply and force protocol developers to decide whether resistance to ASICs remained an objective worth defending.

A product announcement, not deployed hash power

Bitmain’s April 3 listing priced the Antminer E3 at $800 per unit and indicated that the first batch would ship in July 2018. Contemporaneous reporting said orders were limited to one machine per customer and that the initial batch appeared sold out by the time of publication.

Those details established that Bitmain was taking orders; they did not establish how many units existed, how many were sold or whether any E3 machines were already mining. Bitmain did not publish an independently auditable production count, network-hashrate share or customer-delivery record on April 3.

The company marketed the E3 as an Ethash ASIC. Unlike a GPU, which can perform many kinds of computation, an ASIC is designed around a narrower workload. That specialization can improve performance, energy use or capital cost for the selected task, but the announcement did not demonstrate that the E3 would make GPU mining uneconomic.

A later Bitmain specification described a rated hashrate of 180 megahashes per second, with a tolerance of plus or minus 5%, and power consumption of 800 watts. Those were manufacturer ratings, not an independent event-day benchmark. Actual output could vary with operating conditions, pool configuration and network difficulty.

Ethereum’s resistance question became concrete

Ethash was designed to require substantial memory, limiting the advantage available to highly specialized hardware. The E3 showed that memory hardness did not make dedicated implementation impossible. The unresolved question was how large its practical advantage would be.

Ethereum Improvement Proposal 969 was created on April 3. It proposed changing several constants in Ethash through an `ethashV2` variant intended to invalidate existing specialized miners while minimizing disruption to GPUs. Its rationale identified manufacturer concentration, proprietary hardware and possible mining-power centralization as risks.

EIP-969 was a technical proposal, not an adopted Ethereum upgrade. Submitting an EIP did not change consensus rules, disable the E3 or prove that Ethereum users supported a defensive hard fork. Adoption would have required review, implementation in client software and broad coordination among network participants.

That distinction was central to the event-day record. Bitmain had announced a product. An Ethereum contributor had proposed a response. Neither side had yet demonstrated the resulting distribution of mining power.

What April 3 established

The defensible conclusion on April 3, 2018 was that specialized Ethash mining had entered the public commercial market and forced an abstract protocol-design debate into an immediate governance question. GPU miners faced a potential new competitor, while Ethereum developers had to weigh hardware concentration against the technical and coordination risks of changing proof of work.

No cryptocurrency price or return is attributed to the announcement because the reviewed sources do not provide a controlled, venue-specific observation window capable of separating the E3 news from other market influences.

Later confirmation

On July 6, 2018, Bitmain’s official Chinese-language blog confirmed that the E3 supported Ethash, repeated the 180-megahash and 800-watt ratings, and said the first domestic batch was scheduled to ship from July 16 through July 31. That later company record corroborates product specifications but does not retroactively establish event-day deployment or performance.
