Changpeng Zhao set out his post-prison priorities on September 29, 2024, saying that education, philanthropy and long-term investment in decentralized technology, artificial intelligence and biotechnology would occupy his next chapter after leading Binance.
The statement was Zhao’s first substantive public account after his release from U.S. custody on September 27. It did not announce a return to Binance, a new token or an exchange product. Instead, the founder and former chief executive presented Giggle Academy, an education project introduced before his imprisonment, as a major continuing commitment.
That distinction mattered because Zhao remained one of cryptocurrency’s most recognizable entrepreneurs, but his November 21, 2023 guilty plea had ended his executive leadership of the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange. His September 29 message offered evidence of his intended personal direction, not a change in Binance’s governance or compliance obligations.
Education moved to the center
Zhao said Giggle Academy was progressing and would be a large part of his life for the next several years. He also said he intended to devote additional time and funding to charity, particularly education.
The project was not created on September 29. A Giggle Academy concept paper dated February 2024 described a proposed free, gamified and adaptive platform covering approximately grades one through 12. It characterized the initiative as a zero-revenue undertaking aimed especially at children who lacked access to conventional schooling.
Those were design goals, not demonstrated results. Neither Zhao’s September 29 post nor the reviewed contemporaneous records supplied enrollment, completion, learning-outcome or operating-cost data. The statement therefore established his commitment to the initiative but did not prove that the platform had achieved its educational objectives.
Zhao also reported that a book he was writing was approximately two-thirds complete. That progress estimate came directly from Zhao and was not independently auditable from the public record.
Investment without an exchange announcement
Zhao said he would continue investing in blockchain and other decentralized technologies, artificial intelligence and biotechnology. He described himself as a long-term investor concerned with impact rather than returns.
That language signaled continued involvement with technology and digital assets, but it contained no named investment, committed dollar amount, transaction, fund structure or deployment schedule. It should not be read as evidence that capital had already been invested on September 29 or that any particular blockchain project had received his backing.
The post also said Binance appeared to be operating well without his involvement. That was Zhao’s assessment, not an independent measurement of the exchange’s finances, market share, compliance performance or governance. No Binance corporate filing or exchange notice reviewed for September 29 announced an executive change tied to his release.
The legal separation remained important
Zhao pleaded guilty on November 21, 2023 to causing Binance to fail to maintain an effective anti-money-laundering program under the Bank Secrecy Act. He resigned as chief executive as part of the broader resolution. Binance separately pleaded guilty to federal offenses and agreed to pay more than $4 billion in penalties and undertake compliance remediation with an independent monitor.
The Justice Department’s record distinguishes Zhao’s individual case from Binance’s corporate resolution. His completion of imprisonment did not cancel the company’s guilty plea, terminate its compliance obligations or restore him as chief executive.
The defensible conclusion for September 29 was therefore limited but consequential: Zhao publicly redirected his personal agenda toward education, charity and technology investment after leaving custody. The statement showed where he said his attention would go; it did not establish completed investments, measurable educational impact or a renewed management role at Binance.
