Coinbase announced on February 25, 2019 that Coinbase Pro would begin accepting inbound XRP transfers after 10:00 a.m. Pacific time, opening a staged path toward XRP trading on one of the most closely watched U.S.-based cryptocurrency venues. The company said deposits would remain open for at least 12 hours before any trading began, and that activation depended on enough XRP reaching the platform.

The verified event was narrower than an immediate retail listing. On February 25, customers could deposit XRP into Coinbase Pro, provided they supplied the destination tag required to route funds correctly. Coinbase.com and the company’s consumer mobile applications were not included in the announcement. The decision nevertheless mattered because XRP was then the third-largest cryptocurrency by market capitalization, according to contemporaneous CoinDesk coverage, and Coinbase listings routinely attracted attention as tests of liquidity, compliance and U.S. market access.

A controlled market opening

Coinbase planned three order books: XRP/USD, XRP/EUR and XRP/BTC. Its announcement described four successive operating states—transfer-only, post-only, limit-only and full trading. In transfer-only mode, customers could fund accounts but could not place or execute orders. Later stages would first allow makers to post orders, then permit limit orders to match, and finally enable the full set of order types.

The timetable was conditional. Coinbase said an order book could remain in one stage or be suspended if its market-health metrics were not met. That qualification is important: the February 25 record proves that deposits opened and a launch process began, not that every pair immediately reached full trading or that identical liquidity existed across the books.

Initial access covered Coinbase Pro customers in the United States except New York, the United Kingdom, supported European Union member countries, Canada, Singapore and Australia. This was a jurisdiction-specific product decision, not worldwide availability.

The market response, with limits

Contemporaneous Cointelegraph coverage reported XRP at $0.338 at its press time, up more than 11% over the preceding day and 5.4% over the preceding week, attributing those figures to CoinMarketCap. Those measurements describe CoinMarketCap’s aggregated XRP market at an unspecified article capture time on February 25; they are not a Coinbase XRP/USD close, because that book had not yet opened, and they are not a universal closing auction in a market that trades continuously across venues.

The timing makes the listing announcement a plausible catalyst for part of the move, but the surviving sources do not establish exclusive causation. They do show that traders repriced XRP while a major new access route was being prepared. CoinDesk and Cointelegraph both treated the listing as consequential because it expanded the prospective pool of professional-market participants and added dollar, euro and bitcoin price-discovery venues.

What the listing did not decide

Coinbase’s action was an exchange listing decision. It was not a determination by a court or regulator about XRP’s legal status, an endorsement of Ripple, or evidence that XRP would gain durable use in payments. CoinDesk’s February 25 report noted that a federal class action was already alleging XRP was a security and that Ripple disputed that characterization. The existence of that dispute belongs in the event-day record; later legal outcomes do not.

The staged design also separated custody operations from market readiness. Requiring a destination tag reduced routing errors specific to XRP transfers, while the minimum deposit window gave market makers time to supply inventory before matching began. That operational sequence was the concrete institutional development on February 25.

Later context

CoinDesk added on February 26, 2019 that Coinbase Pro had enabled full trading in the three announced books. Coinbase separately expanded XRP to its retail website and mobile applications on February 28. Those later milestones confirm that the staged launch progressed, but they should not be folded backward into what was available on February 25.
