Crypto.org Chain activated its mainnet on March 25, 2021, giving Crypto.com’s CRO asset a native blockchain rather than limiting it to its existing token representation on Ethereum. The network’s official mainnet repository records the status of `crypto-org-chain-mainnet-1` from 01:00 UTC on March 25.

The launch mattered because it changed CRO’s technical role. CRO had circulated as an ERC-20 token, whose transfers depended on Ethereum. Native CRO could instead pay transaction fees, move between accounts and be delegated to validators on the new proof-of-stake network. Crypto.com described the chain as public, open-source and permissionless, although those were project claims whose practical decentralization depended on validator participation and stake distribution.

From an Ethereum token to a native currency

The mainnet did not automatically make every ERC-20 CRO token native. Holders and custodial platforms needed migration or withdrawal processes that delivered CRO on the new network. VALR, for example, announced support for a fixed 1:1 conversion for qualifying balances and temporarily closed CRO withdrawals while auditing its allocation.

That operational distinction was important. An Ethereum address and a Crypto.org Chain address belonged to different networks, and sending an asset through an unsupported route could delay or prevent access. Migration availability also varied among exchanges and self-custody tools. The launch therefore created a native settlement system without instantly eliminating the Ethereum version of CRO.

The chain was built with the Cosmos SDK and Tendermint-based consensus software. Validators proposed and confirmed blocks, while CRO holders could delegate native tokens to validators and participate economically in network security. Crypto.com promoted lower fees and faster processing than Ethereum, but the surviving event-day records reviewed for this reconstruction do not provide a neutral, like-for-like measurement window supporting a precise cost or throughput comparison.

A live network, not a completed ecosystem

Mainnet activation established an operating ledger and staking system. It did not mean every function discussed in Crypto.org Chain’s roadmap was available on March 25. Planned capabilities involving additional assets, non-fungible tokens and interoperability required later software releases or governance decisions.

That boundary matters when reconstructing the event. A roadmap expresses intended development; it is not proof of deployed functionality. The defensible March 25 claim is narrower: the genesis configuration, chain identifier, node software and peer infrastructure were available for validators and users to operate the native network.

The launch also did not independently prove the project’s decentralization language. A permissionless codebase can allow broad participation while stake remains concentrated among a smaller set of validators or delegators. No complete, preserved event-day dataset was located showing validator ownership, voting-power concentration, geographic distribution or the share of infrastructure controlled by Crypto.com. Those measurements should not be inferred from the launch announcement alone.

Institutional significance

Crypto.org Chain gave Crypto.com greater control over the infrastructure surrounding its branded asset and payment ambitions. Instead of relying exclusively on Ethereum for CRO settlement, the company and its ecosystem could develop around a dedicated network with its own validators, governance parameters and fee market.

That design also shifted responsibility. Users had to distinguish between token formats, exchanges had to manage migrations and network integrations, and validators assumed operational and slashing risks. The launch expanded the asset’s utility while introducing another blockchain whose security and reliability had to be evaluated independently.

A project update published on April 13, 2021 later confirmed that the mainnet had launched successfully on March 25. That later confirmation supports the launch record but should not be used to imply that subsequent transaction counts, delegated balances, upgrades or ecosystem applications were already known on the event date.

The durable conclusion is therefore technical rather than price-based: March 25 marked CRO’s transition from solely relying on an Ethereum token contract to also functioning as the native asset of a live proof-of-stake blockchain.
