Ethereum’s mainnet deposit contract reached the minimum participation threshold for Beacon Chain genesis on November 24, 2020, turning a conditional December 1 launch target into a scheduled protocol event.
Contemporaneous tracking cited by The Block placed the crossing at approximately 02:30 UTC. The requirement was 16,384 validator deposits funded with 32 ETH each. Multiplying those protocol parameters produces 524,288 ETH; that total is a calculation from the required deposit count and deposit size, not a separate market estimate.
Because the threshold was reached before the November 24, 12:00 UTC cutoff, the configured seven-day genesis delay could expire on December 1. The Ethereum Foundation subsequently recorded the exact genesis time as December 1, 2020 at 12:00:23 UTC.
The milestone did not mean the Beacon Chain was already producing blocks on November 24. Ethereum’s existing proof-of-work chain continued operating, and applications, transactions and smart contracts did not move onto the new chain that day.
What participants committed
The Ethereum Foundation had released the version 1.0 specifications and identified the mainnet deposit-contract address on November 4, 2020. Its launch conditions required at least 16,384 deposits seven days before the earliest permitted genesis time. If participation had remained below that level at the cutoff, genesis would instead have occurred seven days after the threshold was eventually met.
A deposit represented more than a signal of support. Each properly configured 32 ETH commitment was intended to fund a validator responsible for proposing blocks or attesting to the chain’s state after genesis. Participants also needed compatible client software, synchronized infrastructure and control of the appropriate validator keys.
The commitment carried material operational constraints. On November 24, the deposit path was one-way: Phase 0 did not provide an immediate mechanism for returning deposited ETH to the existing chain. Depositors also faced penalties for failing to perform validator duties and more serious consequences for provably conflicting behavior. Reaching the numerical threshold established sufficient configured stake for genesis; it did not establish that every validator would remain online or correctly configured.
Why the threshold mattered
The Beacon Chain was the first production component of the roadmap then commonly called Ethereum 2.0. Its immediate job was to bootstrap proof-of-stake consensus alongside the existing proof-of-work network. It did not yet execute ordinary user transactions or replace miners on November 24.
That narrow scope was still institutionally significant. A multi-client protocol developed through research networks and public testnets had attracted enough irrevocably committed native assets to start a production proof-of-stake chain. The deposits supplied an observable protocol-level measure of participation rather than a survey, company forecast or expression of trading interest.
The 524,288 ETH threshold should not be confused with 16,384 independent people or organizations. One operator could control multiple validators, and the deposit count alone did not disclose beneficial ownership or measure decentralization. It also did not prove future throughput, application capacity, security or completion of the broader upgrade roadmap.
No dollar valuation or price-reaction claim is made here. Later record check
On November 27, 2020, the Ethereum Foundation confirmed that the threshold had started the genesis process and instructed operators to prepare their nodes. The Beacon Chain subsequently reached genesis on December 1 at 12:00:23 UTC. Those later confirmations validate the scheduled milestone but do not change the event-day distinction: November 24 triggered genesis; it was not the launch itself.
