Genesis attempt stalls

Ethereum client teams attempted to start the new Holešky public test network on September 15, 2023, but the network did not begin producing usable block proposals as planned. Contemporaneous reporting identified a configuration mismatch, and the later Lighthouse client release recorded the result plainly as a failed genesis caused by a misconfiguration. A relaunch was therefore required.

The failure was operational, not a halt of Ethereum mainnet. Holešky was a separate proof-of-stake test environment, and its purpose was to expose configuration, client and validator problems away from the chain carrying real assets. The incident nevertheless mattered because Holešky was intended to become the principal public proving ground for Ethereum staking infrastructure and protocol development as Goerli moved toward retirement.

The September 15 attempt also carried symbolic weight: it was scheduled for the first anniversary of Ethereum’s September 15, 2022 transition from proof of work to proof of stake. That symbolism did not change the technical result. On September 15, 2023, the verified development was a failed testnet genesis, not a successful network launch.

Why Ethereum needed another testnet

Ethereum’s testing environment had split into different jobs. Sepolia was oriented toward application and smart-contract testing. Holešky was designed for validators, staking operators, client teams and infrastructure providers that needed to exercise the proof-of-stake system at scale. The official network repository described it as a permissionless network merged from genesis and a replacement for Goerli for staking, infrastructure and protocol work.

Goerli had also developed an awkward economy around goETH, a token meant to be freely available and economically worthless. Its limited supply made large testing allocations difficult to obtain and encouraged an unofficial market. Holešky’s design aimed to remove that constraint through much more abundant test ether while supporting a validator population large enough to stress client software. These were design objectives, not measurements achieved by the failed September 15 genesis.

That distinction is important. A testnet token is not ether on Ethereum mainnet, and a testnet’s validator count does not represent separately secured economic capital. Holešky was infrastructure for rehearsing upgrades and operational procedures before exposing the production network to them.

What the failure established

The clearest verified conclusion on September 15 was narrow: the participating clients did not converge on a working chain from the supplied genesis configuration. Contemporaneous coverage reported that Holešky could not attain slot proposals and that client teams would need another start. The surviving primary client record confirms both the failed genesis date and a configuration cause.

The record does not establish a vulnerability in Ethereum mainnet consensus, a loss of user funds or a market-price effect. No such claims are needed to explain the significance. A multi-client network depends on participants agreeing on the same genesis state and parameters. Finding a mismatch in a disposable environment is exactly the kind of failure a testnet is meant to contain, while the need to redistribute corrected configurations showed the coordination burden of launching shared public infrastructure.

For operators, the practical consequence was that data from the failed chain could not simply be treated as the canonical Holešky history. The later Lighthouse instructions told participants to remove data directories from the failed launch before joining the replacement chain and specifically warned about stale slashing-protection data. That instruction was published after September 15 and is included here only to clarify why the first genesis could not be silently repaired in place.

Later context

Primary repository records show that Holešky ultimately launched on September 28, 2023. That later success does not alter the September 15 event: Ethereum’s planned Goerli successor missed its first genesis because of configuration error, contained the problem outside mainnet, and forced client teams to coordinate a clean relaunch.
