Ethereum core developers used a consensus-layer call on July 14, 2022 to map a tentative route toward moving the main network from proof-of-work to proof-of-stake during September. Under one schedule discussed by protocol coordinator Tim Beiko, the transition could reach its terminal total difficulty during the week beginning September 19.
That was a planning scenario, not an approved activation date. The timetable depended on another shadow fork, client releases, the Goerli testnet transition and a later decision on mainnet parameters. The distinction mattered because some event-day coverage compressed a conditional sequence into the simpler claim that developers had “picked” September 19.
Shadow fork nine exposed work still remaining
The July 14 call followed Ethereum’s ninth mainnet shadow fork, a test network that copied mainnet conditions so developers could exercise Merge software without changing the production chain. The test reached its terminal total difficulty substantially earlier than forecast: developer Parithosh Jayanthi said the estimate chosen a week earlier had been early by approximately a day and a half, while a newer estimate was off by roughly half a day.
The fork was finalizing, but participants did not describe it as trouble-free. Jayanthi estimated during the call that approximately 30% of the shadow network was offline. The discussion identified a Lighthouse synchronization problem, invalid blocks encountered by several Besu nodes, deliberately unusual Nethermind configurations used to reproduce a rare issue, Erigon nodes that had not reached the chain head and a configuration error that initially prevented Nimbus nodes from receiving requests.
Those percentages and timings were contemporaneous developer estimates from the test call, not independently audited network measurements. The meeting record also showed recovery: after configuration changes, affected Nimbus nodes returned and the network finalized without another reported interruption. Galaxy Research and CoinDesk separately confirmed that mainnet shadow fork nine ran on July 14.
The episode demonstrated the purpose of repeated rehearsals. A shadow fork could reveal client-specific behavior, faulty configuration and sensitivity to an unexpectedly early difficulty threshold before comparable code reached Ethereum mainnet.
The September window remained conditional
Developers next considered when to merge Goerli, the remaining major public testnet rehearsal. The working discussion contemplated Goerli’s execution-layer transition around August 11, followed by several days of observation and a possible mainnet decision during an August 18 core-developer call.
Beiko then outlined a sequence in which mainnet-capable client releases could arrive during the week of August 22, the Beacon Chain’s Bellatrix upgrade could follow after an operator-update period, and the proof-of-work chain could reach its terminal total difficulty during the week of September 19. He also described more aggressive scheduling that might move the transition into the week of September 12.
No terminal total difficulty or Bellatrix epoch for mainnet was selected on July 14. Developers explicitly discussed the need to give validators, infrastructure providers and community-tool maintainers enough time to install compatible execution- and consensus-layer software. A failed Goerli rehearsal, client defect or changing proof-of-work hash rate could still alter the sequence.
Why the checkpoint mattered
The July 14 record showed Ethereum’s Merge moving from an open-ended engineering project toward an operational release plan. The proposed change would replace proof-of-work mining as Ethereum’s consensus mechanism by joining the existing execution layer with the Beacon Chain’s proof-of-stake consensus.
That made the schedule relevant to miners, validators, exchanges, custodians and application operators, but the call established no market-price consequence. This reconstruction therefore makes no claim about ether’s return, trading volume or reaction window on July 14.
Later context
After Goerli completed its rehearsal, developers selected different final parameters. The Ethereum Foundation said on August 12 that September 15 was the estimated target, with possible error of about one week. Ethereum ultimately completed the Merge on September 15, 2022. Those outcomes confirm the significance of the July planning work but were not knowable when the July 14 call ended.
