Ethereum’s Ropsten testnet transitioned from proof-of-work to proof-of-stake on June 8, 2022, completing the first Merge conducted on one of Ethereum’s longstanding public test networks.
The milestone joined Ropsten’s existing execution layer with a purpose-built Beacon Chain responsible for proof-of-stake consensus. Contemporaneous reports from CoinDesk and The Block confirmed that the transition occurred on June 8, while the Ethereum Foundation subsequently recorded the same completion date in its official testnet documentation.
Ropsten did not carry Ethereum mainnet’s economic activity, and its test ether was not intended to have monetary value. Its importance came from providing client developers, node operators, application teams and infrastructure providers with a public environment in which to test the most complicated Ethereum upgrade attempted by that date.
How the transition worked
The Ropsten Merge unfolded in two stages. The Ropsten Beacon Chain first activated the merge-compatible Bellatrix rules at slot 24,000 on June 2, 2022. The execution-layer transition, known as Paris, was then configured to begin when Ropsten reached a Terminal Total Difficulty of 50,000,000,000,000,000.
Terminal Total Difficulty measured the cumulative mining difficulty on the proof-of-work chain. Ethereum developers used that threshold instead of a fixed block height because the Merge was designed to replace proof-of-work block production once the specified cumulative work had been reached. Ropsten’s volatile hash rate made the precise activation time difficult to forecast, even though the Ethereum Foundation had estimated June 8 or June 9.
After the threshold was crossed on June 8, the next execution payloads were produced through Beacon Chain validators rather than proof-of-work miners. Under the published completion criterion, the transition was considered complete when the Beacon Chain finalized a post-threshold block.
The exercise also tested a new operational model. Node operators needed compatible execution and consensus clients running together, with both layers configured for the same Terminal Total Difficulty. That coordination mattered because a successful protocol specification was not enough by itself; independently developed clients also had to communicate through the Engine API and agree on the resulting chain.
What the milestone established
The verified result established that Ropsten could pass through the Merge and continue under proof-of-stake consensus. It also moved Ethereum’s deployment process from purpose-built Merge networks and shadow forks into testing against a longstanding public testnet with existing state, applications and infrastructure.
That was meaningful evidence of engineering progress, but it was not proof that the mainnet transition was ready or free of operational risk. The Ethereum Foundation’s May 30 and June 3 instructions expressly placed additional client testing and transitions of the Sepolia and Goerli testnets before selection of mainnet activation parameters.
No official mainnet Merge date had been set on June 8, 2022. The Ropsten event therefore did not activate proof-of-stake on Ethereum mainnet, end mainnet mining, enable withdrawals of staked ether or change mainnet transaction capacity and fees. Each of those claims required a separate protocol milestone.
The event also did not establish a market-price effect. Ether traded continuously across exchanges, and the surviving protocol records do not isolate the announcement from broader market conditions. This reconstruction makes no price, return, volume or capitalization claim.
Later confirmation
On June 21, 2022, the Ethereum Foundation formally recorded that Ropsten had run through the Merge on June 8 and announced that the testnet would be deprecated. That later primary record confirms the event date but does not alter what the June 8 transition established: a successful public testnet rehearsal, not completion of Ethereum’s mainnet migration.
