Filecoin’s mainnet went live on October 15, 2020 at epoch 148,888, turning the project’s long-developed system for buying, selling and verifying digital storage into a production blockchain.
Filecoin’s launch announcement placed the transition at approximately 3:00 p.m. UTC. Contemporaneous CoinDesk reporting identified the epoch at approximately 14:44 UTC. The difference reflects the project’s rounded announcement time rather than competing launch dates: both records identify epoch 148,888 on October 15 as the mainnet threshold.
The milestone mattered because Filecoin was attempting something narrower and more technically demanding than creating another transferable token. Its protocol joined a blockchain, a marketplace for storage deals and cryptographic proofs intended to show that providers had created and continued to maintain the storage promised to clients.
What became operational
Filecoin clients could arrange deals with storage providers, while providers could commit capacity, publish deals and submit recurring proofs. The network’s Proof-of-Replication construction was designed to demonstrate that data had been placed in dedicated physical storage. Proof-of-Spacetime was designed to demonstrate that the committed data remained stored over an agreed interval.
Successful providers could earn FIL-denominated payments and block rewards, while failures to submit required proofs could reduce their recognized storage power and trigger protocol penalties. Those mechanisms created economic incentives, but the October 15 launch did not establish that storage would always be cheaper, faster or more durable than centralized alternatives. Those outcomes depended on provider operations, retrieval performance, client demand and continued protocol reliability.
Filecoin also did not replace the InterPlanetary File System. IPFS supplied content-addressing and peer-to-peer data distribution, while Filecoin added a separate incentive and verification layer for storage commitments. The distinction was important: finding content through IPFS did not by itself prove that a Filecoin storage contract existed, and a Filecoin commitment did not guarantee that every application would retrieve data with the responsiveness of a conventional cloud service.
A transition rather than an empty restart
The mainnet did not begin from an entirely blank network. Filecoin had announced in September 2020 that its Space Race test environment would graduate into mainnet through protocol upgrades and state transitions. Its October 14 operational guide said committed sectors would migrate with their corresponding storage power when the chain reached the mainnet epoch.
That guide reported that the Space Race 2 environment had reached 530 pebibytes, or PiB, of onboarded storage before launch. This was a project-reported capacity measurement from the incentivized testing and transition environment. It did not mean that clients had stored 530 PiB of unique, useful files, nor did it independently establish the geographic or operational independence of the underlying hardware.
Carrying state forward gave participating providers an immediate role in block production and storage operations. It also meant that launch-day assessments had to distinguish accumulated committed capacity from new activity occurring after epoch 148,888.
Launch was a checkpoint, not proof of maturity
Filecoin said on October 15 that the network had entered a quiet monitoring period and that participants were reporting successful operations. That was a contemporaneous project assessment, not an independent uptime audit. The launch record established that the planned mainnet transition occurred and that FIL distribution and production network activity could begin; it could not establish long-term demand, security or decentralization.
Early FIL price and market-cap comparisons were especially uncertain because exchanges were opening at different times, some earlier products represented futures or claims rather than transferable mainnet FIL, and much of the token allocation remained subject to vesting. This reconstruction therefore makes no launch-day price, return, volume or market-cap claim.
The defensible October 15 conclusion is narrower: Filecoin crossed its designated mainnet epoch and activated a live, incentive-based market for cryptographically verifiable storage. Whether that market could deliver competitive, durable infrastructure remained an open question on the launch date.
