HIVE Blockchain Technologies later reported that it launched 200 petahashes per second of cloud-based SHA-256 mining capacity on September 30, 2018, giving the publicly traded miner the capability to mine bitcoin and other assets using the same algorithm.
The capacity was supplied by Genesis Mining under an amended agreement. HIVE’s November 29 financial release said the launch supplemented 24.2 megawatts of GPU mining infrastructure in Sweden and Iceland. The company reported that income from bitcoin mining began on October 1, so the defensible September 30 event is the activation of capacity—not a claim about coins produced or revenue earned that day.
The expansion mattered because HIVE had previously concentrated on GPU-mineable assets including ether and ethereum classic. Adding SHA-256 capacity diversified its mining exposure and demonstrated how a listed company could obtain industrial-scale computing power through a service contract rather than immediately operating the underlying machines itself.
From a physical facility to cloud capacity
HIVE and Genesis had originally agreed in December 2017 to construct a dedicated ASIC mining operation in Sweden. The planned equipment was expected to provide approximately 200 PH/s while consuming about 20 megawatts. HIVE placed the estimated consideration at $34 million.
One petahash represents one quadrillion hash calculations per second. The contracted 200 PH/s therefore described nominal computing capacity of 200 quadrillion hashes per second. It did not guarantee a fixed quantity of bitcoin: mining output also depended on the capacity actually delivered, network difficulty, uptime, pool performance and the allocation of HIVE’s capacity among compatible assets.
On August 15, 2018, HIVE announced that it had amended the arrangement. Genesis would initially provide the 200 PH/s through cloud hosting, while physical mining rigs were expected to be delivered within the following 12 months. HIVE said the revision would reduce anticipated operating costs and allow it to select a potentially more advantageous location, then expected to be in North America, for the eventual machines.
Those delivery and cost statements were forward-looking on September 30. The activation of cloud capacity did not establish that the physical rigs had arrived, that a North American site had been selected or that the arrangement would prove profitable.
What changed institutionally
The structure separated economic access to hash power from possession of mining hardware. Genesis supplied and operated the capacity; HIVE obtained the associated mining economics under the contract. That distinction reduced the immediate dependence on completing the proposed Swedish ASIC facility, but it also concentrated operational and counterparty reliance on Genesis.
HIVE’s August announcement explicitly warned that Genesis might not provide the expected capacity or deliver equipment on schedule, and that the arrangement might not operate on commercially beneficial terms. Those warnings were material because a quoted hashrate is a capacity measure, not evidence of sustained uptime, realized output or positive margins.
The launch also reflected the increasingly industrial character of Bitcoin mining in 2018. Access to specialized ASIC hardware, electricity, hosting and maintenance had become central competitive inputs. A corporate contract for 200 PH/s represented infrastructure deployment rather than a change to Bitcoin’s protocol or monetary rules.
Later confirmation and limits
HIVE disclosed the September 30 activation in its November 29, 2018 quarterly release and management discussion, after the event date. A later filing preserved by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission independently repeats the launch date and original $34 million consideration. These later primary records confirm that the scheduled capacity entered operation, but they were not public confirmation available on September 30 itself.
No September 30 bitcoin price, network-hashrate share, mining output or profitability figure is asserted. The surviving records establish contracted capacity and activation timing, not independently audited machine-level performance for that date.
