IBM made its Food Trust blockchain network generally available worldwide on October 8, 2018, after an announced 18-month testing period, while Carrefour separately confirmed that it had joined the platform. The paired announcements marked a significant transition for enterprise blockchain: a prominent project was moving beyond pilots into a subscription service backed by participating retailers, growers, suppliers and technology providers.

IBM said retailers and suppliers had used the network to track millions of individual food products during testing. That figure was an IBM-supplied aggregate, not an independently audited measurement disclosed at product level. The more firmly verifiable development was commercial availability itself, corroborated by IBM’s announcement, Carrefour’s corporate record and contemporaneous Reuters reporting.

A permissioned network, not a cryptocurrency

Food Trust ran on IBM Cloud and used Hyperledger Fabric, an open-source framework hosted by the Linux Foundation. IBM described the service as compatible with GS1 standards used in food-industry traceability. Participating organizations could share origin, processing and shipping records while controlling access to their own data.

That structure distinguished Food Trust from public cryptocurrency networks. It did not introduce a freely traded token, permissionless validation or a monetary asset comparable with bitcoin. Known commercial participants operated within a governed, permissioned system. Its relevance to the digital-asset sector was therefore technological and institutional: blockchain architecture was being sold as business infrastructure outside cryptocurrency markets.

IBM offered three software modules covering product tracing, certification management, and data entry and access. Its October 8 announcement placed entry-level subscription pricing at $100 per month and said suppliers could contribute data without charge. Reuters reported that full use by a global business would cost about $212,000 annually, illustrating that participation could vary substantially by organizational scale and service level.

Carrefour added commercial weight

Carrefour said the collaboration was intended to help establish a global food-traceability standard covering the chain from producers to sales channels. Its corporate announcement identified product origin, quality, nutritional properties, allergens and recall information as possible categories of shared data.

Reuters reported that Carrefour planned to expand the technology across 300 fresh products worldwide by 2022. That was a forward-looking corporate plan as of October 8, 2018, not evidence that the deployment had already reached 300 products or that the target would necessarily be completed.

The announcement also followed Walmart’s September 24, 2018 request that suppliers of fresh leafy greens implement farm-to-store blockchain traceability within one year. Together, the two retailer records showed that Food Trust had prospective demand from large buyers rather than existing only as an IBM demonstration.

What the launch did—and did not—prove

The commercial launch mattered because enterprise blockchain projects often struggled to progress from controlled trials to shared production systems. Food Trust presented a concrete governance model, named participants and paid service modules addressing a specific coordination problem: tracing goods across organizations that maintained separate records.

It did not prove that blockchain entries were accurate at the point of collection. A tamper-resistant ledger can preserve submitted information without establishing that a farmer, processor, sensor or importer entered truthful and complete data. Access controls could protect commercial information, but they also meant outsiders could not independently inspect the entire record.

IBM’s claims that tracing could fall from days or weeks to seconds described system capabilities and pilot experience, not a universal result for every product or participant. Food safety still depended on testing, identification, physical controls and regulatory action. At the October 8, 2018 evidence boundary, the defensible conclusion was narrower: IBM had opened a permissioned blockchain service globally, and Carrefour had committed to using it at greater scale.
