Initia halted its layer-1 blockchain and connected rollups at 15:41:30 UTC on October 23 while investigating a security incident, interrupting transactions across infrastructure designed to coordinate multiple application-specific chains.

The stop matters beyond one token or application. Initia’s base chain provides security, liquidity routing and interoperability for its “Interwoven Rollups,” so pausing both layers demonstrates how a fault within shared infrastructure can affect an entire rollup ecosystem. The records available before Coinburn’s October 23 ledger edition do not establish a restart time, final loss or completed repair.

Public records confirm the disruption

Coindaro reported querying an Initia public node at 18:30 UTC on October 23. The latest block remained 23,365,925, timestamped 15:41:30 UTC, with no later block observed during that measurement. That is a point-in-time check of one public endpoint, not a complete assessment of every validator, rollup or service connected to the network.

Kraken’s official status page separately said at 16:15 UTC that INIT deposits and withdrawals had been temporarily paused because of an issue affecting the Initia network. The notice said other funding methods remained operational. An exchange restriction confirms operational consequences for Kraken customers but does not independently identify the fault or measure losses.

Initia said through its official social channel, as reproduced by The Block and Cointelegraph, that it was working with security teams, validators and exchanges to establish the incident’s scope. That announcement confirms the project’s characterization of the halt as security-related. It is not a postmortem, and no opened primary record provided a transaction-by-transaction reconstruction.

The loss estimate is preliminary

Initia co-founder Ezaan Mangalji told The Block that preliminary findings pointed to a previously unknown bug in Initia’s MoveVM implementation that permitted unauthorized token minting but did not apply to native INIT. He estimated that approximately $2.7 million of AUSD, ether and USDC was minted or bridged out before the pause.

That figure is a participant’s early estimate, not an audited loss statement. The Block said Initia had not confirmed a final amount. Cointelegraph likewise reported that the project had not publicly established the precise cause, total user impact or restoration timetable. The overlap between assets created on Initia, assets removed through bridges and value later consolidated on Ethereum also remains unresolved.

Accordingly, the verified development is narrower than claims that Initia definitively lost a particular sum. The chain and rollups stopped; unauthorized minting was reported; exchange transfers were restricted; and the investigation remained open. Who ultimately bears any shortfall, whether assets can be frozen or recovered, and whether the network will alter prior state are unanswered questions.

Earlier audits do not settle the cause

Initia’s official audit repository lists MoveVM as covered by Zellic in June 2024, OtterSec in November 2024 and a Code4rena competition in January 2025. Those records establish that versions of the component received review before mainnet, not that every later code path was examined or that the October 23 incident falls within the audited scope.

The public MoveVM repository describes the software as Go bindings around an Aptos-derived Move virtual machine used by Initia applications. That architecture supplies context for the co-founder’s preliminary attribution, but the repository did not contain an opened October 23 advisory identifying a vulnerable function, affected release or patch.

The next reliable checkpoints are an Initia postmortem, a reviewed code fix, validator restart instructions and resumed block production. Until those appear, the reported mechanism and approximately $2.7 million estimate should remain attributed and provisional rather than presented as final forensic findings.
