Lightning Labs released the mainnet alpha of Lightning Pool on November 2, 2020, opening a market in which Bitcoin Lightning Network node operators could bid for inbound channel capacity or offer capital to create it.

The launch addressed a practical constraint in Lightning payments. A node can send only through channels with sufficient balance on its side, while receiving requires capacity pointed toward it. Merchants, wallets and exchanges therefore needed other nodes to open or rebalance channels toward them, but the network had no common market through which that demand could be signaled and priced.

Pool attempted to turn that operational problem into an auction. It did not add liquidity to Lightning automatically, nor did it change Bitcoin’s consensus rules. It introduced software and a coordinated marketplace for deciding where channel capital should be committed.

How the alpha worked

Lightning Labs described Pool as a non-custodial, sealed-bid, uniform-clearing-price auction for Lightning Channel Leases. Buyers submitted bids for inbound liquidity; sellers submitted asks to open channels using their bitcoin. Cleared participants in each batch received the same market-clearing price, subject to the limits in their orders.

The company said its auction ran roughly every 10 minutes. Cleared channel openings were assembled into one Bitcoin transaction, a design intended to reduce on-chain fees compared with opening each channel in a separate transaction. The resulting lease committed capacity for a defined term enforced through Bitcoin Script.

At launch, the only available term was two weeks, or 2,016 Bitcoin blocks. CoinDesk reported a maximum Pool account size of 10 BTC, citing Lightning Labs chief technology officer Olaoluwa Osuntokun, and said liquidity providers received their premium upfront. Those were alpha constraints and product terms, not a promise of any particular return.

The open-source `poold` client could be used through a command-line interface or RPC, backed by an active `lnd` node. Lightning Labs also made Pool available in Lightning Terminal v0.3.0, while saying a graphical interface would come later.

Non-custodial did not mean fully decentralized

The custody claim was specific. Lightning Labs said users retained control of funds through client-side verification and Bitcoin contracts rather than transferring bitcoin to an unsecured company account. Its November 2 technical paper described auction accounts as multisignature outputs with one key held by the participant and another by the auctioneer.

But Lightning Labs still operated the auctioneer that accepted orders, proposed batches and coordinated execution. The alpha also did not treat every seller identically: by default, buyers were matched with well-connected nodes selected through the company’s Bos Score system. Calling Pool non-custodial therefore did not establish that the service lacked coordination, software, availability, counterparty-performance or market-liquidity risks.

Why the development mattered

Lightning’s capacity problem was more than a technical inconvenience. Without reliable inbound liquidity, a service could be online yet unable to receive the payments users wanted to send. Before Pool, operators commonly arranged channels through direct requests, chat groups or over-the-counter services. A shared auction could supply price signals and make capital allocation less ad hoc.

The launch also created a new category of Bitcoin-denominated return: compensation for committing channel capacity for a fixed period. Lightning Labs compared a channel lease with both a fixed-income instrument and an internet bandwidth-peering agreement. That analogy described the contract’s economics; it did not make a Pool lease equivalent in risk, liquidity or legal status to a bond.

The evidence available on November 2 established a functioning public alpha, an open-source client and a documented auction design. It did not establish deep liquidity, durable yields, broad adoption or operational reliability. Those outcomes required trading history that did not yet exist.
