Litecoin was the strongest-performing major cryptocurrency on February 25, 2018, advancing across two differently constructed market records while bitcoin and most other large assets remained below their levels from one week earlier.

Kraken’s February 25 report placed litecoin at a volume-weighted average price of $217.21, with a stated gain of 9.85% and $20 million traded across the exchange’s LTC pairs. That was the largest percentage increase among the assets displayed in Kraken’s report. The exchange recorded $250 million in total trading across its crypto-to-fiat and crypto-to-crypto markets during the preceding 24 hours.

CoinMarketCap’s separate historical snapshot showed litecoin at $220.47, up 6.45% over 24 hours. It ranked fifth by calculated market capitalization at $12.210 billion, based on a circulating supply of 55,380,233 LTC, and had $1.029 billion in reported aggregate 24-hour volume.

Litecoin separated from the top five

The CoinMarketCap snapshot showed a divided market. Bitcoin was $9,664.73, down 1.07% over 24 hours and 9.92% over seven days. Ether was $844.81, up 0.89% for 24 hours but down 9.69% over seven days. XRP fell 0.69% for the day and 17.14% for the week, while bitcoin cash declined 0.32% and 22.09% across the corresponding windows.

Litecoin, by contrast, was up 0.18% over CoinMarketCap’s seven-day window. That was a marginal weekly increase, but it made LTC the only one of the five largest assets in the snapshot with a positive seven-day return. Its 6.45% daily gain exceeded bitcoin’s by 7.52 percentage points, a Coinburn calculation using CoinMarketCap’s stated rolling 24-hour changes.

The move did not mean every large cryptocurrency was falling. Sixth-ranked Cardano gained 6.82% over 24 hours, slightly more than litecoin in CoinMarketCap’s measurement. The narrower verified conclusion is that litecoin led the five largest assets and was the largest percentage gainer in Kraken’s displayed market set.

Why the records disagree

Kraken and CoinMarketCap even assigned opposite February 25 directions to bitcoin: Kraken reported BTC at $9,576 and up 1.43%, whereas CoinMarketCap recorded $9,664.73 and a 1.07% decline over 24 hours. Ether’s stated increase was also 3.03% on Kraken but 0.89% in CoinMarketCap’s snapshot.

Those differences are not necessarily errors. Kraken’s report used the volume-weighted average across every Kraken trading pair for each asset, with price and volume data taken at approximately 1 p.m. Pacific Time. CoinMarketCap aggregated prices and reported activity from multiple exchanges using a different observation window. Cryptocurrency traded continuously, without a universal closing auction or consolidated tape.

The comparison therefore establishes direction only where the datasets agree. Both records show litecoin rising materially on February 25, but neither supplies a causal order-flow account or identifies the buyers responsible.

A rebound still inside a volatile market

The February 25 performance followed substantial volatility. CoinMarketCap’s February 18 snapshot had placed litecoin at $215.74 after a 40.58% seven-day gain, while bitcoin stood at $10,551.76. By February 25, litecoin was slightly higher in the aggregator’s snapshot even as bitcoin was lower by $887.03, or approximately 8.41% by Coinburn calculation from those two dated observations.

That divergence mattered because it showed asset-specific repricing within the broader market rather than a uniform recovery. It did not establish that litecoin had begun a durable trend, that its fundamentals had changed, or that February 25’s relative strength would persist. The defensible event-day finding is limited but clear: litecoin preserved its level across the week and led the largest crypto assets during a fragmented February 25 market.
