NEAR Protocol disclosed a $21.6 million token sale led by Andreessen Horowitz on May 4, 2020, pairing the financing announcement with details of its staged mainnet rollout. The disclosure placed substantial venture backing behind a new smart-contract network at the moment it was moving from public testing toward persistent production state.

The chronology requires care. Contemporaneous coverage published on May 4 described NEAR as launching its mainnet alongside the financing. NEAR’s own roadmap, however, says the first phase actually launched on April 22. May 4 was therefore the public financing and launch disclosure date, not the genesis date.

CoinDesk reported that approximately 40 other investment firms joined the token sale under terms defined by a16z. Named participants included Pantera Capital, Libertus, Blockchange, Animal Ventures, Distributed Global and Notation Capital. TechCrunch independently reported the $21.6 million amount and identified a16z as the lead investor.

A mainnet with important restrictions

Calling the April network a mainnet did not mean NEAR had already become an unrestricted, community-operated blockchain. The project labeled the initial stage “MainNet POA,” referring to proof of authority. NEAR’s roadmap said the NEAR Foundation would operate the initial nodes, control ordinary token transfers and create accounts for approved developers.

The roadmap nevertheless distinguished this phase from a testnet because its state was intended to persist. Approved developers could deploy applications against a network record that the project expected to carry forward. Initial tokens could also be distributed to contributors and prospective validators, although most holders could not freely transfer them.

Several technical and governance limitations remained explicit. NEAR planned to start with one shard because additional capacity was not yet needed. Slashing was disabled, and the network initially depended on an honest-supermajority assumption. The project intended later stages to transfer validation to a broader set of participants, test the network under proof of stake and eventually allow token holders and validators to vote on removing transfer restrictions.

Those conditions matter because “mainnet” can conceal large differences in operational maturity. On May 4, NEAR had persistent production state, but it did not yet offer the permissionless transfers, open account creation or community control normally associated with a fully decentralized public network. No unrestricted NEAR market price could be inferred from the financing announcement because the underlying sale was private and ordinary transfers remained constrained.

Why the financing mattered

The sale arrived four days after a16z announced a new $515 million fund for investments in cryptocurrency networks and businesses. In that announcement, the firm identified programmable blockchains, decentralized finance, payments and Web3 networks as long-term investment areas. NEAR became an immediate example of that institutional strategy moving into a base-layer protocol.

The protocol was entering a crowded field. Ethereum already supported a substantial smart-contract economy, while other networks were pursuing proof-of-stake and scaling designs. NEAR presented Nightshade, its sharding approach, as a way to divide computation and avoid requiring every node to process every transaction. On May 4, that was a design and development proposition—not verified evidence of production-scale adoption or superior performance.

The financing gave NEAR resources and prominent backers, but it did not prove that developers would build durable applications, that later decentralization votes would succeed or that the network would operate securely under open participation. What May 4 established was narrower and still consequential: a well-funded protocol had moved beyond a disposable test environment, while publicly acknowledging that decentralization would be a process rather than a launch-day fact.
