Public reporting on October 16, 2022 identified Société Générale-FORGE on the French financial regulator’s register of digital-asset service providers, revealing that the banking group’s blockchain subsidiary had secured registration for custody and exchange activities on September 27, 2022.
The Autorité des marchés financiers, or AMF, recorded the company under registration number E2022-049. The listed services were custody of digital assets, purchasing or selling digital assets for legal tender, and exchanging digital assets for other digital assets. Operating a digital-asset trading platform was not among the registered services shown in the record.
Registration, not blanket approval
The terminology matters. Some contemporaneous headlines described the development as regulatory “approval,” but the AMF record classified Société Générale-FORGE as a registered *prestataire de services sur actifs numériques*, commonly abbreviated PSAN in France and described in English as a digital-asset service provider.
That status established that the subsidiary had entered France’s formal provider regime for the specified activities. It did not mean the AMF had approved every token, trading strategy or future product associated with the company. It also did not convert digital assets into bank deposits, guarantee their value or authorize Forge to perform services absent from its registration. The event-day evidence supports a defined regulatory perimeter, not an unrestricted crypto license.
Why the bank connection mattered
Société Générale-FORGE was not a newly formed retail exchange seeking its first foothold. It was the banking group’s dedicated digital-assets subsidiary and had already participated in institutional blockchain projects involving tokenized securities. Its appearance on the register therefore showed an established financial group preparing regulated infrastructure for activities that crypto-native firms had largely developed outside traditional banking.
The registration also fit a broader company strategy visible before October 16. On September 21, 2022, Société Générale Securities Services announced services for asset managers running professional funds invested mainly in cryptocurrencies. That separate offering included depositary, valuation and liability-management functions. The company’s announcement identified Forge as the group’s existing crypto-asset specialist, but it did not say the September 27 registration automatically extended to every Société Générale business.
France’s institutional route into crypto
By October 2022, France’s provider register included both crypto-focused companies and more conventional financial businesses. Forge’s addition illustrated how the same framework could accommodate a bank subsidiary without treating blockchain activity as indistinguishable from ordinary banking.
For institutional clients, the significance was less about immediate access to a new coin than about operational structure. Custody, conversion between legal tender and digital assets, and crypto-to-crypto exchange are core functions needed to connect asset managers and capital-markets clients with tokenized instruments. Registration gave Forge a documented basis for providing those named services in France, subject to the applicable regime.
What remained unknown on October 16
Neither the AMF entry nor the contemporaneous reports established that Forge had launched a public retail exchange, opened the services to every Société Générale customer or generated material digital-asset revenue by October 16. The records reviewed also provide no defensible event-day measure of client assets, transaction volume, token inventory or market share.
No cryptocurrency price movement is attributed to the disclosure. Bitcoin and other digital assets traded continuously across multiple venues, and the surviving sources do not supply a named instrument, venue and measurement window capable of isolating a market response. The verified development was narrower but consequential: a major bank-affiliated subsidiary had entered France’s digital-asset provider register for three specified service categories, and that fact became public crypto-industry news on October 16, 2022.
