Solana’s decentralized-exchange activity and transaction fees stood at record levels on March 17, 2024 as a wave of memecoin trading brought an exceptional concentration of speculative traffic to the network.

A contemporaneous report drawing on DefiLlama recorded $3.79 billion of Solana DEX volume for March 15, surpassing the dataset’s previous daily high of $2.85 billion from earlier in March. Volume remained elevated at $3.44 billion on March 16, while the rolling 24-hour measurement displayed when the report appeared on March 17 was $3.61 billion.

Those are three different windows, not interchangeable daily totals. The March 15 and March 16 figures are historical calendar-day observations; the $3.61 billion figure was a moving 24-hour snapshot taken on March 17. The surviving report did not specify the dashboard’s timezone boundary or preserve its complete protocol-by-protocol inputs, so false precision about a universal Solana “close” would be inappropriate.

Fees and addresses rose with trading

The Block’s network dataset measured $3.83 million, equivalent at the time to 20,350 SOL, in total Solana transaction fees on March 16. It described that amount as a record and reported that most of it came from non-vote priority fees.

Priority fees allow users to improve a transaction’s scheduling position when blockspace is contested. Higher aggregate fees can therefore reflect both more transactions and greater competition for execution. They do not show that every transaction succeeded, that every user paid the same amount or that validators retained the full dollar total.

Address measurements pointed in the same direction. The seven-day moving average reached approximately 1.2 million active addresses on March 16, its highest level since around June 2022. The corresponding average for new addresses approached 870,000, which the contemporaneous dataset classified as a record.

Addresses are not people. One trader, automated program or market-making operation may control many addresses, while several people may interact through one custodial address. The figures establish network activity, not a verified count of individual users.

Memecoins supplied the immediate catalyst

The activity coincided with rapid trading in newly issued and established Solana memecoins. Binance had announced the listing of BOOK OF MEME, or BOME, on March 16 with a Seed Tag, its designation for projects carrying comparatively high volatility and risk. BONK and dogwifhat were also generating substantial trading interest.

By March 17, the Solana-based Jupiter aggregator had recorded more rolling 24-hour volume than Uniswap V3 on Ethereum, according to CoinGecko measurements cited contemporaneously. That comparison concerned two applications during one moving window. It did not establish that Solana had permanently displaced Ethereum, nor did aggregator volume necessarily represent unique economic activity: routes can cross multiple liquidity pools, and repeated or automated trades can enlarge turnover.

What the records established

The development mattered because Solana was demonstrating that a low-cost, high-throughput network could attract trading activity at a scale competitive with the largest Ethereum applications. Fees and address creation rising alongside DEX volume showed that the surge was visible across several measurements rather than in token prices alone.

The quality of that activity remained uncertain on March 17. Memecoin turnover can generate real fees and liquidity while remaining highly reflexive, concentrated and vulnerable to manipulation or abrupt reversals. Reported volume did not establish the value ultimately retained by users, the fairness of token distributions or the absence of wash trading.

The defensible event-day conclusion is consequently narrow: Solana processed record measured activity during the March 15–17 window, and speculative token trading was the most visible contemporaneous explanation. Whether those records represented durable adoption could not be determined from the March 17 evidence.
