Tether reported $191.45 billion of reserve assets against $183.50 billion of liabilities as of 11:59 p.m. UTC on September 30, leaving a $7.95 billion surplus behind its fiat-denominated tokens. The company published the figures on October 30 with a reasonable-assurance opinion from BDO Advisory Services.

The surplus rose by approximately $3.85 billion from the $4.11 billion Tether reported at June 30. That recovery matters because USDT is widely used for crypto trading and settlement, but the quarter-end improvement should not be read as proof that the same cushion existed throughout the quarter. BDO explicitly limited its assurance to the September 30 reporting point.

What the assurance report establishes

The report attributed $183.47 billion of Tether’s liabilities to issued digital tokens. It listed $139.58 billion in cash, cash equivalents and other short-term deposits, including $122.84 billion of U.S. Treasury bills, $9.52 billion of overnight reverse-repurchase agreements and $7.18 billion of term reverse repos.

Other reported reserves included $19.08 billion of precious metals, $8.37 billion of bitcoin, $14.18 billion of secured loans, $6.00 billion of other investments and $4.18 billion of public equities. The Treasury bills had a weighted-average maturity below 90 days, while the reverse repos were described as collateralized arrangements with short remaining maturities.

BDO said its procedures included obtaining confirmations directly from banks and depositaries, checking management’s reconciliations, testing asset valuations on a significant sample and reconciling blockchain records for digital assets and token liabilities. It concluded that the reserve report was fairly presented in all material respects under management’s stated accounting criteria.

That conclusion is narrower than an unrestricted audit opinion on complete quarterly financial statements. Tether’s document says the reserve report was extracted from accounting records and does not contain all the presentation and disclosure required for compliance with International Financial Reporting Standards.

Market values helped rebuild the cushion

The report valued Tether’s bitcoin at the September 30 Bloomberg closing price of $83,621.23 and its physical gold at $4,157.41 per ounce. Both categories therefore moved with market prices even without a corresponding purchase or sale.

Unchained calculated that bitcoin’s quarter-over-quarter price increase accounted for roughly $2.47 billion of the reserve-buffer recovery, assuming Tether retained approximately the bitcoin quantity implied by its June disclosure. It estimated that the higher gold price added about $700 million. Those are secondary calculations comparing quarter-end reports, not figures supplied or assured by BDO, and changes in quantities or classifications can affect the result.

The comparison shows why a larger reserve surplus does not necessarily equal cash profit. Fair-value gains increase reported asset values, but they can reverse if bitcoin, gold or public-equity prices fall before assets are liquidated.

Profit measures do not reconcile

Tether’s October 30 release separately claimed $1.5 billion of third-quarter net operating profit and $4.5 billion over the first nine months of 2026, which it attributed mainly to Treasury bills and reverse repos. The assured reserve report does not contain that operating-profit measure.

Instead, its change-in-equity table reports a $1.66 billion financial result for the nine months through September 30 and negative $519 million of net capital movements. The opened documents do not reconcile the $4.5 billion operating-profit claim with the $1.66 billion financial result, so the two figures should not be treated as interchangeable.

BDO also warned that valuations assume normal trading conditions and may not represent realizable values during extraordinary illiquidity or distress at important custodians and counterparties. Its assurance excludes activity before and after the reporting instant, as well as the report’s supplemental notes.

The verified development is therefore precise: Tether’s assured September 30 snapshot showed reserve assets exceeding liabilities by $7.95 billion. It does not establish continuous reserve coverage during the quarter, stress-period liquidation proceeds or the independently verified profitability of Tether’s broader operations.
