TRON’s TRX briefly moved into seventh place among cryptocurrencies by reported market capitalization on January 27, 2019, as traders positioned around the scheduled BitTorrent Token sale. The move stood out in an otherwise weak large-cap market, but it was short-lived: CoinMarketCap’s dated snapshot placed TRX back in eighth, narrowly behind Litecoin.

That distinction matters. A contemporaneous report captured TRX near $0.030 and approximately $2.2 billion in market capitalization at 10:00 UTC, when it was ahead of both Litecoin and Stellar. CoinMarketCap’s surviving January 27 snapshot instead records TRX at $0.02928, with a capitalization of $1.952 billion and seventh-ranked Litecoin at $1.962 billion. The gap at that observation was approximately $10.5 million, or about 0.5% of Litecoin’s capitalization.

A rare large-cap gain

CoinMarketCap’s dated table shows TRX rising 2.11% over its displayed 24-hour window and 22.41% over seven days. Its reported 24-hour volume was $395.9 million, based on the aggregator’s covered markets. Stellar, ranked ninth, had a capitalization of $1.846 billion and was down 3.71% over 24 hours.

Most larger assets were also negative in the same snapshot. Bitcoin was down 0.57% at $3,583.97; XRP was down 1.76% at $0.3094; and ether was down 2.60% at $113.41. Bitcoin’s reported capitalization was $62.74 billion, underscoring how compressed the contest among the lower half of the top ten was during the post-2018 bear market.

The percentages are CoinMarketCap’s displayed changes, not Coinburn calculations. “Market capitalization” here means the aggregator’s reported price multiplied by its circulating-supply estimate. It was not cash held by the network, a measure of protocol revenue or a valuation produced by an audited securities market.

BitTorrent supplied the narrative

The conspicuous event on the calendar was the BitTorrent Token sale scheduled for January 28, 2019, through Binance Launchpad. BitTorrent had announced on January 3 that BTT would use TRON’s TRC-10 token standard, initially seek to reward bandwidth supplied by users, and be offered through Launchpad to eligible non-U.S. accounts.

That relationship gave traders a plausible reason to connect interest in BTT with demand for TRX. Contemporary sale terms called for separate sessions accepting TRX and Binance Coin, further strengthening the narrative around both assets.

The timing does not prove causation, however. Crypto prices are assembled from continuous trading across exchanges, and neither the market-cap table nor the BitTorrent announcement identifies who bought TRX or why. The January 27 move could have reflected sale-related positioning, momentum trading, venue-specific liquidity or several factors at once. It should therefore be described as occurring ahead of the BTT sale, not as conclusively caused by it.

What the ranking did—and did not—show

TRX’s temporary rise demonstrated how quickly rankings could change when competing capitalizations were separated by only a small margin. It did not establish adoption of BitTorrent’s proposed token incentives, successful delivery of BitTorrent Speed or durable economic demand for TRX.

The surviving records also capture different moments. The contemporaneous 10:00 UTC report placed TRX seventh, while CoinMarketCap’s dated snapshot placed it eighth. CoinMarketCap’s displayed archive does not specify the observation timestamp alongside the table, so the apparent reversal cannot be timed more precisely from that record alone. The defensible conclusion for January 27, 2019, is narrow: TRON briefly passed Litecoin intraday, remained ahead of Stellar in the dated snapshot and finished the record separated from Litecoin by roughly one-half of one percent.
