On January 17, 2025, President-elect Donald Trump used his Truth Social account to promote a newly launched Solana token branded Official Trump, or $TRUMP. The announcement linked to a purchase site and presented the asset as Trump's official meme. It arrived three days before his January 20 inauguration, joining political celebrity, crypto speculation and a future president's commercial interests in one freely transferable token.

An Internet Archive capture taken at 02:30:49 UTC on January 18 — 9:30 p.m. Eastern on January 17 — preserves the launch-night website. The page identified Solana contract address 6p6xgHyF7AeE6TZkSmFsko444wqoP15icUSqi2jfGiPN and said the tokens were freely tradeable on the blockchain. That archived record, together with Trump's own post, establishes the launch and endorsement without relying on later price histories.

What the issuer disclosed

The launch site described $TRUMP as a fungible crypto asset on Solana and framed it as an expression of support, not an investment opportunity, investment contract or security. That was the issuer's characterization, not a legal determination by a court or regulator.

Its allocation page said 200 million tokens were available on day one and that supply would grow to 1 billion over three years. It also said CIC Digital LLC, identified as a Trump Organization affiliate, and Fight Fight Fight LLC collectively owned 80% of the tokens subject to a three-year unlocking schedule. The site further stated that CIC Digital and Celebration Cards LLC, described there as the owners of Fight Fight Fight, would receive revenue derived from trading activity.

Those disclosures mattered because headline market capitalization can obscure supply concentration. Multiplying a thinly traded token's price by all 1 billion planned units would produce a fully diluted valuation, not cash available to the affiliated entities and not a realizable estimate of Trump's wealth. Even the circulating-supply figure depended on the issuer's allocation disclosures and the operational meaning of “available.”

A market primed for the launch

The token appeared during an unusually political crypto rally. Earlier on January 17, the Associated Press reported that bitcoin had returned above $100,000 as traders anticipated a more crypto-friendly administration. AP cited CoinDesk for an approximately 5% rise to around $104,000 on January 17. That snapshot did not specify a single exchange pair, precise observation time or UTC daily close, and bitcoin trades continuously across venues, so it should be read as contemporaneous context rather than an official closing price.

$TRUMP was different from bitcoin and from an administration policy. It was a branded meme token promoted by the incoming president through a commercial site. Its launch did not enact a reserve, change securities law or establish a federal regulatory position. It did, however, create an immediate channel through which global buyers could trade an asset linked to Trump's name while affiliated entities held the dominant disclosed allocation.

Why January 17 mattered

The consequential development was not simply that another meme token began trading. A president-elect personally authenticated a crypto asset immediately before taking office, reducing the usual uncertainty over whether a celebrity-themed token was authorized. At the same time, the issuer's 80% concentration and trading-revenue disclosure raised governance, conflicts and market-structure questions that the launch materials did not answer.

No event-day record established who every beneficial owner was, how much revenue had accrued, whether affiliated holders would sell, or how regulators would classify the arrangement. Price claims that became visible over the following weekend also fall outside a strict January 17 frame. The verifiable event-day conclusion is narrower: Trump promoted an official Solana meme token, the site enabled trading, and the disclosed economics concentrated most planned supply in two named entities linked to his business network.

Later-source boundary

Reporting published on January 19 and a Bloomberg blockchain analysis published on February 2 corroborated the Friday-night launch and examined subsequent trading. Those later records help confirm chronology, but their weekend prices, wallet outcomes and profit calculations are not projected backward into this January 17 reconstruction.
