WisdomTree listed its first cryptocurrency product on Switzerland’s SIX exchange on December 3, 2019, placing physically backed Bitcoin exposure inside a conventional exchange-traded security.

The WisdomTree Bitcoin ETP, trading under ticker BTCW in U.S. dollars, carried a total expense ratio of 0.95%. WisdomTree described the product as physically backed, meaning Bitcoin was held to support the instrument rather than exposure being created solely through a cash-settled derivative. SIX identified Swissquote as custodian and Flow Traders as market maker. The product’s ISIN was GB00BJYDH287.

The listing mattered because WisdomTree was an established exchange-traded fund and product sponsor moving into a market then dominated by specialist cryptocurrency issuers. It did not make Bitcoin itself a regulated security, eliminate custody risk or create a U.S. Bitcoin exchange-traded fund. It did, however, give eligible professional investors another route to obtain Bitcoin price exposure through familiar brokerage, custody and exchange infrastructure.

A traditional wrapper around Bitcoin

WisdomTree presented BTCW as a response to practical barriers surrounding direct ownership. An investor buying Bitcoin directly had to arrange execution, safeguard private keys and assess cryptocurrency-specific custody systems. The ETP shifted those operational functions into an issued security traded on a regulated marketplace.

That convenience did not make the structure equivalent to holding Bitcoin. SIX described an ETP as a collateralized, non-interest-bearing bearer debt security. It also emphasized that such products were not collective investment schemes under Switzerland’s Collective Investment Schemes Act and therefore were not supervised by the Swiss Financial Market Supervisory Authority as investment funds. Counterparty, issuer, custody, market-price and tracking risks consequently remained relevant.

WisdomTree said the product was initially available only to professional investors. Contemporaneous reporting also found no trading volume displayed at the time it checked the SIX listing on December 3, so the launch established availability but did not by itself demonstrate investor demand or secondary-market liquidity.

SIX’s expanding crypto shelf

The exchange’s own announcement placed BTCW within an already developing Swiss market for cryptocurrency-linked securities. WisdomTree became the fourth issuer in SIX’s ETP segment, which then contained 19 tradable ETPs; SIX said more than half had a cryptocurrency underlying.

Looking more broadly across both ETPs and structured products, SIX reported 76 instruments with cryptocurrency underlyings. It said CHF 502 million had traded in those products from January 1 through December 3, 2019, 14% more than during all of 2018. Those figures were venue-reported aggregates across multiple products and structures, not BTCW launch-day volume, Bitcoin spot turnover or assets invested in WisdomTree’s product.

The distinction is important. BTCW entered a market that already included competing physically backed Bitcoin products. Its significance came less from inventing the structure than from an established diversified issuer adopting it. WisdomTree had experience with commodity products, including physically backed gold, and argued that a similar architecture could connect digital assets to traditional portfolio systems.

What the launch established

As of December 3, 2019, the verifiable development was narrow but meaningful: a recognized ETP sponsor had placed a Bitcoin-backed debt security on a regulated European exchange, with named custody and market-making providers and published fees.

The listing was evidence of institutional market infrastructure broadening around Bitcoin. It was not evidence that regulators had endorsed Bitcoin as an investment, that professional investors had committed substantial capital, or that exchange-traded exposure had resolved the risks associated with the underlying asset. Launch-day assets outstanding and completed trading volume were not established in the contemporaneous records reviewed.
