XRP briefly exceeded Ether’s quoted market capitalization on September 21, 2018, interrupting a ranking that had placed bitcoin first and Ether second for most of the preceding months. Contemporaneous reporting placed the crossover at approximately 15:00 GMT, when CoinMarketCap figures showed XRP near $23.4 billion and Ether near $23.3 billion.

The lead changed again before the historical daily snapshot was recorded. CoinMarketCap’s September 21 snapshot ranks Ether second at $25.18 billion and XRP third at $22.35 billion. That reversal makes the episode an intraday crossover—not evidence that XRP secured a lasting position above Ethereum’s native asset.

A rally visible across datasets

Kraken’s September 21 daily market report recorded XRP at $0.5636, up 37.2% for the report’s daily measurement window, with $120 million traded across the exchange’s XRP markets. Kraken reported $352 million of total exchange volume across all listed markets for the same daily report.

The contrast with September 20 was substantial. Kraken’s preceding report recorded XRP at $0.4107, a 24.8% daily gain, and $16.2 million in XRP volume. Total reported exchange volume on September 20 was $79.3 million. These figures show that XRP’s advance was already underway before the September 21 acceleration and that activity expanded sharply alongside the price.

CoinMarketCap’s September 21 historical snapshot used a different aggregation window and market universe. It recorded XRP at $0.5615, up 24.45% over 24 hours and 101.36% over seven days, with aggregate reported 24-hour volume of $4.10 billion. Ether was $246.58, up 11.34% over 24 hours, with $2.84 billion in reported volume. Bitcoin remained first at $6,734.95 and a quoted market capitalization of $116.39 billion.

The differences between Kraken’s percentage change and CoinMarketCap’s percentage change are not contradictory. Kraken described activity on its own venue, while CoinMarketCap aggregated prices and volumes from multiple markets using its own snapshot timing. Neither surviving page supplies sufficient detail to reconstruct every constituent trade or establish one universal closing price.

Product expectations, not a proven cause

Market coverage linked the rally to expectations surrounding xRapid, Ripple’s proposed cross-border liquidity product using XRP. On September 17, Ripple executive Sagar Sarbhai told CNBC that he expected the product to enter live production in roughly a month. That statement was a company forecast, not an announcement that commercial deployment had occurred by September 21.

The timing makes xRapid expectations a plausible contributor to sentiment, but the available record does not prove that one announcement caused the rally. Momentum trading, broader crypto-market gains and the relatively fragmented liquidity of 2018 could also have affected the move. Attribution should therefore remain cautious.

What the ranking did—and did not—show

Market capitalization was calculated from a reference price multiplied by reported circulating supply. It was a useful comparison measure, but it did not represent cash invested, network revenue or immediately realizable liquidity. A temporary change in ranking also said nothing by itself about transaction demand, institutional usage or the relative technical capabilities of XRP Ledger and Ethereum.

The crossover nevertheless mattered as a market signal. XRP had doubled over CoinMarketCap’s seven-day window and, for part of September 21, challenged the most stable ordering beneath bitcoin. The subsequent reversal within the same date underscored how quickly headline rankings could change during a concentrated cryptoasset rally.

Later confirmation

On October 2, 2018, Ripple announced that xRapid was commercially available and moving into production with MercuryFX, Cuallix and Catalyst Corporate Federal Credit Union. That later announcement confirms the product reached the stage Sarbhai had anticipated, but it was not information available to traders on September 21 and does not establish why XRP’s price moved that day.
